'I'lie fibres of (io/l'x coliniiii are nearly always degenerated. The .;o//e.v of IJxxdiH-r—the fine fibres which form a cap to the extremity of the jjosterior horn, extending a short distance along the external and internal borders of it—degenerate and disappear in the early stages of tabes. Another situation in which early degeneration is said to occur is the terminal arborisation of the root fii)res around the cells Fig. 327.—Photomicrograph Section of Lumbar Enlargement of Spinal Cord in a case of verv advanced Tabes, showing extreme sclerosis of posterior columns. There is complete atrophy of all the fibres e.vcept in the median oval area of Flechsig. >; 10. of Clark's colimm. Certain grou])s of fibres enjoy a particular im- munity, and can be seen intact when all the rest of the posterior column is sclerosed : («) the median oval area of Flechsig; (6) cornu commissural bundle; (c) the posterior internal triangle; but this, group does not offer the same resistance as the other two, which are certainly of endogenous origin. The situation of the degenera- tions are indicated in Figs. 325, .'526' and .'?27. Changes are very often present in the cutaneous nerves, and in long-standing cases a ]iortion of the muscular nerves are sclerosed. In cases exhibiting bone disease the nerves supplying the bone have been found degenerated, and, in the iieighboiu'hood of a perforating^](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b21294586_0582.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
