    ( [ 101 ] mon remedies, and which rather appear to be aggravated by the ufe of emollients, it will frequently prove ferviceable. SOLUTIO ARSENICI. R Arfenici pulveris fubtilifhmi. Kali praeparati fing. gran. xvj. Aquae diftillatae unc. iv. Thefe are to be digefted together in a fand- heat, till the arfenic is completely diffolved. Dr. Fowler, who diretts this formula, employs it in the cure of agues, as it appears, with confider- able fuccefs. In furgical cafes, its ufe will be chiefly, though not entirely, limited to its ap- plication as a topic in cancerous ulcers. The folution being diluted to the proportion of one grain of arfenic to a quart, a poultice is to be made of it with crumb of bread, and applied next'the wound. The late Mr. Juftamond tried arfenic very extenfively in cancerous af- fe&ions, and, from his defeription, even its ex- ternal application is to be managed with great caution, on account of the deleterious effects it is liable to produce on the fyftem, probably from its being abforbed. In adminiftering this folution internally, Dr. Fowler dire£ts a dole of ten or twelve drops, to adults, twice or three times a day ; but it may be prudent to begin with a much fmallcr quantity. The properties of arfenic are thofe of a very powerful tonic. K 2
