    [122 ] It may not be improper to mention here, that Dr. Kirkland diftinguifhes the irritability of ulcers into two kinds, the inflammatory, and the fpafmodic. The exigence of the former is evident from the highly florid colour of the part: the latter may be diltinguifhed by its languid, purple, and glalfy appearance. Both are confiderably painful and fore, but the latter when ever fo {lightly touched, is remarkable for throwing the mufcles of the limb into aftion. In ulcers of the latter defeription, this oint- ment will be found of fervice, whilft thole conjpofitions, into which turpentines enter, .are wholly inadmiffible. In mo kind of ulcer, Dr. Kirkland alfo employs the ballam of Peru on lint, with confiderable good effctl. UNGUENTUM PICIS CUM SULPHURE. fk riels liq U1USC lib. fs. Cerae flavaa unc. fs. Florum fulphuris unc. ij. The wax and the tar being melted together, the fulphur is to be gradually ftirred in. This, which is one of the formula: of Guy's Hofpital, is an excellent application for the cure of ti- nea. It is neceffary, during its ufe, for the pa- tient to have his head repeatedly lhaved, and to wear a clofe-fitted cap of the thick green oil-
