Nature can often feparate and throw off the offending Matter, and recover it lelf 5 poor Men and Others have recovered of ‘Dyfenteries, Fevers, and even Plagues, without taking any Remedies: Prudence in Eating and D inking, moderate Labour and Exercifc, a chearfu] Spi¬ rit, a good Confcience, a contented Mind, Prudence, Juftise* Courage, Temper, and good Nature, moderate and timely Reft and Sleep, Experience of what is hurtful or uieful, Command of Pafiions, avoiding Extremes and fudden Changes and Acci¬ dents, Hardinefs of Living and of the Body, Free-thinking, Reafon and Contempt of Pleafures, and no fear or Anxiety are Preventives of Dileafes : Warm Gruel, Broths with a little Nitre, one Difh at the Great-meal, with warm Water, Wine or warm Beer, little Supper, White-wine Whey, are the like. When the Spirits are weak, Aromaticks raife and enliven them 3 when turbulent, and moving impetuoufly into the Muf- cles or Parts, without the Diredtion of the Mind, they are retrained and quieted by Opiates and Fatids : When they are irritated by a Humour or a Flatus, Revulfions are made by Slifters, Plaifters or Unguents 3 or the Vapours are fub- du’d and expelled by Diaphoreticks and Carminatives, and opening the Paffages of the Natural Secretions : In the Ebulli¬ tions of Fevers, even to Frenzy, the fupple loft Emulfions, or the temperate and refrefhing watry DecoBions, or the cooling dcids, or cooling and fixing Salts, and all that tends to fepa¬ rate and fecrete the Matter of the Difeale, and. lupport Na¬ ture’s Operation in preferving Life, are ufeful. Vomits, Acids* bitter Herbs, fixt Salts, Abftinence and Air reftore the Sto¬ mach. AIcali Powders and Earths, Animal Parts calcined* Oily Bitters and Aromaticks, foft and fweet Gumms, Turpen¬ tine Balfarns, all that is gently temperate and mucilaginous, or what has a natural Jelly or kind of loft Varnifh 3 all thefe con¬ tribute to remove a corroding Pain in the Stomach, too craving an Appetite, a precipitate.Digeftion, (harp Humours, or pain from Grit in the Paff'ges of the Urine, &c.
