![PREFACE. In consequence of the great attention which the operation of subcutaneous division of the neck of the thigh-bone has attracted, since I first proposed and performed it on December 1 st, 1869, as a means of rectifying the extreme deformity occasionally met with in cases of bony anchylosis of the hip joint, I have reprinted in a connected form the papers pub- lished in reference to this operation, the interest of which will, I trust, not be diminished by the fact that the subject matter of the present pamphlet has for the most part appeared in the journal literature of the day—see British Medical Journal, December 24th, 1870, and subsequent numbers. I brought the details of the first successful case before the notice of the British Medical Association at the meeting at Newcastle in August ] 870, having previously exhibited the patient at the Medical Society of London on April 25th, 1870, when he was able to stand and walk about the room without any assis- tance. As far as possible I have now collected the details of all the cases, published and unpublished,](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b21038119_0007.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
