    ON PAINFUL AND NERVOUS DISEASES, AND ON DISEASES OF THE EYE, &c. INTRODUCTION. iHE remedial powers of Veratria in Tic-dou- loureux, Neuralgia, Affections of the Heart, and Amaurosis were unknown previously to January, 1834, when I published the first edition of this work, in which is detailed my experience as to the external use of Veratria in those diseases. In June of the same year a second edition appeared, which contains the first account of the internal administration of Veratria and its salts in the same diseases. The present edition not only contains my still more extended experience of the employ- ment of Veratria in various diseases, hut also pre- sents an account of my discovery of Aconitine, and of certain new remedies for affections of the Eyes, Ears, and other parts. In this edition the prepara- tion and chemical history of Veratria and Aconitine have been omitted, as the Royal College of Physi- cians of London has admitted them into the Phar- macopoeia lately issued.
