Tlie mid- dens and ashj)its were cleaned out and liuiewashed, and all refuse heaj)s in the vicinity removed. The Hos|)ital was refurnished throughout, and equii)ped with all necessary details. The Vicar of Cannock kindly allowed the services of the parish nui-se, Miss Wihson, who had been specially ti-ained through Tiursiiig typhoid cases, and who took charge of the establishment, Avith an assistant nurse and a night nurse to hel]) her. A Avard maid, cook, and laundry maid were also engaged. The result of these measures Avas the effectual stamp- ing out of the Broomhill ej)idemic. While these cases Avere being treated in hospital, four cases Avei*e admitted from other parts of the district. Tavo of these were in one family in Longford Lane, Hridg- town, Avhex’C Avas found immediate disconnection of the house drainage, but no pi'oiier system of seAverage. One case Avas from HaAvks Oreen, in a house which, amongst otliers, Avas supplied until recently Avith Avater from im- pure .sources, but the South Statfordshire Com])any’s water is noAv laid on in this ]iart of the district. The remaining case occurred in Bradbury Lane, Avhere Avas found defec- tive connection at the scullery sink. * Out of tlie 14 cases admitted into hospital, one death (a Avoman) occurred. The medical men originally in attendance continued to attend their cases, and the routine avoiL in the Hos])ital ran smoothly, through the excellent supervision of Miss Wihson. The Council acted commendably in stipulating that no expense be sjiared to ensure the thorough rooting out of the di.sease, and thoAigh the initial cost of furnishing and the maintenance charges of the Hospital in connection with this typhoid epidemic amounted to about £176, still, in sanctioning the same, and thereby effectually prcA^ent- ing the spi-ead of a disease both insidious and (langerous, the Council, as a Sanitary AuthoritA', has performed a great seiwice to the ])ublic health of the district.
