In each of these cases, however, the wearer is conscious of deficiencies which perhaps no eye may detect, but which, in the loss of the natural function, will be felt, how- ever perfect the simulation of outward form. Artificial teeth, however, if judiciously and skilfully inserted, may be justly considered to afford greater advantages than all other me- chanical substitutes In surgery; they may be rendered almost as useful as the natural teeth, not only from their capability of restoring and preserving the general health by their assist- ance in mastication, and the health of the re- maining teeth and sockets by their support, but also for the aid they afford to a clear and dis- tinct utterance, and, in an ornamental sense, the beauty they impart to the human countenance ; in which last point of view, their importance may best be estimated by observing the dis- figurement occasioned by the loss or mutilation of the natural teeth. In all these properties, the artificial may be rendered nearly an equivalent substitute for the natural organ. But as no mechanical part
