If we consider, however, how it can be made to perceive the faintest traces of odors when consciously applied, as in the physiological experiment, we must realize how much material might be kept from entering into the subconscious sphere and from these creating moods and emotions. I have often observed that those who are fondest of strong scents (women for the most part) belong to the highly impressionable class, while those with a well developed conscious self, careful observers, and those of analytical habits cannot abide perfumes. This sense, which usually creates merely subconscious im- pressions to man because it is not trained in him, is in some animals the principal stimulant to intelligent action. Biffi and Schiff found that dogs, deprived directly after birth of the use of this organ by the destruction of certain parts of the mucous membrane in the nose, could not even find the tit of the mother ani- mal, and would surely have perished if they had not been guided at each suckling; on growing
