    When we reached Napoleon Bonaparte’s bed¬ room there was no light whatever in it-—it was perfectly dark. Count Montholon met me at the door—I knew his voice he led me up to Napoleon Bonaparte’s bed-side, and introduced me. After the usual ceremony of introduction had passed, I inquired into his state of health, and the nature of his complaints. I could not see him, as he would not permit a light to be brought into the room, but felt him. The pulse was tranquil, heat moderate, and the moisture on the skin rather more than natural. He com¬ plained much of his belly, which I examined, but could discover no tension or hardness ; the bowels were slow, and appetite bad. His voice was strong, and he had some cough. Not being able to see him, to judge rightly of his complaint, we did not prescribe any thing that night. However, it was arranged that I should continue my attendance on him in con¬ junction with Professor Antomarchi. On visiting Napoleon Bonaparte on the morn¬ ing of the 2d of April, we were informed that he had passed a restless night, had perspired pro¬ fusely, and was then in a state of great debility.
