Peter Iselburg has signed the engraved title, which shows a hunting scene in the lower compartment, and he is presumably also the engraver of the emblems in the book which are evidently the work of a good artist. Froschover, 1584 £10 10s 4to. Half calf. 115 leaves. With a fine portrait of the authoress and 100 engravings of emblems. The text is in French and Latin. ‘There is dedicatory poem in French to Jeanne d’Albret, Queen of Navarre, and at the end there are printed several sonnets to the same person and M. de la Caze, at the Court of Navarre. The series of emblematical engravings by Woeriot belongs undoubtedly to the finest and most interesting among the early books on this sub- ject, and is of considerable artistic merit. They are the same as in the 1571 Lyons edition. Old calf, a little rubbed, g.e. 80 + 480 pp., 16 leaves. Engraved portrait of Bishop Aloisius Carafa, to whom the book is dedicated. There is a long disseration on the history of his family with fullpage engravings of coats of arms and genealogical tables, family trees, etc. With an engraved title- page by Peter Paul Rubens, engraved by Galle, and a most interesting and varied series of several hundred emblematical engravings. There are also some in- ‘teresting engravings of ancient rings. Among the emblematical engravings is one showing a printing press, several show early machinery and there is a series of engravings of birds and animals. Each plate has a few verses on prominent statesmen, men of letters, painters, poets, etc., of the period and a large engraving of an emblematical character. Every page is surrounded by a decorative border. Fine device at end. First edition, with Stimmer’s fine woodcuts of one of the most attractive emblem books ever issued. Among the interesting subjects shown by the cuts are an organ, a kitchen, calculating table, angling, etc. Dedicated to the son of Frederic II of Norway.— Usually the 1591 edition is described as the first, see Fairfax Murray Catalogue. The present edition appears to be very rare. ‘The British Museum has a copy, but there is no copy in the Bibliotheque Na- tionale and it is not recorded by Brunet or Graesse The Heber copy. With a beautiful engraved titlepage of Renaissance design and 15 fullpage emblematical engravings. This book, which was probably privately published for the members of this 16th century literary society is an admirable example of Italian printing at its best. It is printed in Roman type on thick paper and the illustrations are admirable specimens of the copper engraving of the period. The book is very rare. G.)
