    reached twenty-two or twenty-three years of age, and died in his eighty-seventh year. A brother of my grandfather, the Rev. Nathaniel Rawlings, was pastor of the Baptist Church at Trow- bridge, Wilts, for many years. His senior deacon was named Selfe. He was a rich, kind, worthy man, and my mother, in her girlhood, spent a week in a visit to his only child, a daughter. From this gentleman descended a progeny which became numerous in the third and fourth generation, and some of them dis- tinguished members of society, as H. S. Selfe, Ksq., one of the stipendiary magistrates of the metropolis, and H.G.Winterbotham, Esq., member for the borough of Stroud.* The Rev. N. Rawlings was one of the converts of the Rey. B. Beddome, of Bourton-on-the-Water, by whom he was baptized. I never saw him. My impression is that he left no surviving offspring. My father was a native of Suffolk. He was born at a farmhouse at Badingham about the year 1767. This farmhouse is still in the occupation of a member of the family. I once visited it, probably in 1826, when my uncle Samuel lived there. In primitive fashion the lower part was divided into three apart- ments, communicating with each other. At one end was the parlour, at the other the dairy, and between these the common room occupied the middle of the building. The church of the hamlet is at a short distance from the farmhouse. It is remarkable chiefly for the number of the funeral monuments and tablets to the * And Under Secretary of State to Mr. Gladstone. He died near Rome, when on a tour.
