    chief ensued, it may be presumed that the pa- rents of the children upon whom these experi- ments were made would have thought otherwise; and might have been tempted to take disagree- able and even illegal steps to revenge themselves. Luckily nothing serious ensued, except that it was then asserted, that Vaccine pustules were a common occurrence, and long lists of cases were published where this eruption had taken place. The sagacious discoverer had been too atten- tive to the phenomena of the disease to deserve being suspected of overlooking so obvious a cir- ‘cumstance. He maintained with modesty, that pustular eruptions had never occurred to his pa- tients; and he was persuaded that some mistake had been committed; and that perhaps the Vac- cine fluid employed was not of a proper kind. This suggestion gave great offence to those who had published pustular cases; they were alarmed lest their skill should be questioned and their practice diminished.
