Mr. Spilsbury had his own Antiscorbutic Drops which he was anxious should reach the poor, as well as the rich who could pay seven shillings a bottle. They were sealed with the emblem of Hope. The book is also a very curious piece of Goldsmithiana. 367 Stephenson (Dav., W.A.) Medicine made to agree with the institutions of nature of a new mechanical practice of physick. Lon- ds. Old calf. 3 folding plates at end, showing the machines invented by the author for applying the “instruments of nature, air, water and motion to the human body.” The author believed in a regulated circulation of the blood, and he constructed a machine in which to take vapour baths combined with some kind of mechanical massage-apparatus. He believed that his exercises would help persons suffering from asthma, agues, dropsie, etc., and his ideas seem certainly far in advance of his time. This book, first published . in 1784, of which ten editions appeared up to 1846, was the standard work in pediatrics for 60 years and the best book on the subject up to that time in English, except Harris. It is based on the author’s own clinical observations and contains the first clear description of poliomyelitis. ‘“‘ Underwood’s was the first treatise on children’s diseases anything like our modern textbooks in style and quality.”’ (Ruhrah).
