![MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE ADMINISTKATIVE AKKANGE.MENTS Infant welfare and postnatal clinics are lield at Hamilton Square, Mount Grove, the North Health Clinic in Park Poad West, and the South Health Clinic in Hedford Avenue. The Haniilton Square Clinic was opened in 191(3; the Mount Grove Clinic in 1929 ; the North Health Clinic at the end of 1929; aial the South Health Clinic in Heceinbcr, 1994. Staff.—The executive staff engaged on Maternity and Child Welfare work at the end of the year consisted of Dr. Deacon (Hamilton Square antenatal and ])ostnatal clinics) ; Dr. Williams (North ante- natal and postnatal clinics) ; Dr. Sandilands (Mount Grove postnatal clinic) ; Dr. Muir (South postnatal clinic) ; and Mr. Herd (South ant(‘- iiatal clinic). Dr. Mary Deacon continued to aid as Inspector of Midwives. i\Iiss E. A. Smith resigned her i)Ost as Assistant Ins]jector of Midwives in October and was succeeded by Aliss i\I. M. Graham. In addition to the i)art-tiine services of the Chief Health Nurse and the whole-time services of the Assistant Insj^ector of i\Iidwives, the equivalent of the whole time of eight nurses was available for maternity and child welfare work at the end of the year. The services of the Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (Air. Herd), who joined the staff of the de[)artnient in December, are available for difficult cases sent by the Assistant Aledical Officers from the various clinics, and by medical ^Jractitioners in the area. INSPECTION AND SUPEEVISION OF AIIDWIVES Work under this section is concerned with the administration of the Alidwives and Alaternity Homes Acts, 1902 to 1926; the visiting of the homes of inidwiA-es, inspecting their instruments, etc., advising them on the details of their work and on their duties as set out in the above Acts, and in the rules issued by the Central Alidwives Board. Number of midwives.—During the year 1995, 63 midwives (ex- cluding those on the staff of the Birkenhead Alunicipal Hospital—23 in number) entered their names on the local register as practising in the Borough. 6 midwives left the district. Of the 63 midwives, 61 were trained and 2 untrained. Number of cases attended by midwives.—The cases attended by midwives alone (no doctor being in attendance) numbered 2,087; three- quarters of the total births in the Borough. Visits of inspection.—The Assistant Inspector of Alidwives paid 97 quarterly and 22 special visits of inspection.
