    There had been a thunderstorm with heavy rain on the previous day, which had made the camp- ing ground damp and unhealthy. In the evening I had the camp struck and removed to a dry and well raised spot; where, after the tent had been pitched, I had the patient removed. I sat beside him the whole night with my hand on his pulse; and to my great joy, at about 1 a.M. 1 found a flicker of the pulse off and on. In the course of another hour, it was _ fully established. I then held out to the patient hopes of recovery, which I could not do before, though repeatedly asked. There was cholera amongst the camp followers also at the time. I asked Captain Cameron, Lord David Kenedy’s sporting friend and companion, to order some beef-tea for the patient. The Captain looked aghast at me: “ Beef-tea!” he exclaimed, ‘“‘ where are we to get the beef from @” “Why,” I said, “send to the village and get a cow; the patient is well able to pay for one: and after securing the required beef for the tea, distribute the remnants among the followers.” “ By Jove,” said the Captain, “‘ that is a capital idea; we can have shin-soup too.” The cow was got, and we enjoyed the tea and the soup ; whilst the followers had the rest of the carcase, which they much needed ; for, from being wet
