    and unable to get proper supplies from the village, they were half-famished. The next morning, with the cot on which the patient lay, improvised as a dooly, we made a march of ten miles, and eventually got to Bellary on the 4th morning,—the very distance that I had ridden in three hours!! This case won me much credit in the station, as the patient was a favourite, not only in the Regiment, but in the whole Cantonment also. His recovery resulted, I fully believe, not from.my medical treatment alone, but also from his own previous good health and sound constitution. The following extract of a letter from the Medical Board, Madras, was on this occasion received by me through the Superintending Surgeon :— ‘* Hxtract from the Medical Board’s letter, No. 771, Fort St. George, 12th June 1851; to Superintending Surgeon Roser Scott, Ceded Districts, Bellary :— *“You will convey the approbation of the Board to Assistant Apothecary Shortt for the judicious treatment of the case of Lieutenant Lord David Kenedy of the Ist Regiment Light Cavalry. (A true Extract.) (Signed) ROBERT SCOTT, Superintending Surgeon, Ceded Districts. -Suptpa. Suren’s. Orrice, C. D., Bellary, 20th June 1851.”
