Order thereon, 3rd August 1871, No. 1,170 :—Ordered that 23 copies of the Pamphlet referred to be forwarded to the Acting Inspector-General, Indian Medical Department, for distribution; and that the opinions of Dr. Shortt and other Medical officers who have paid attention to the treatment of snake- bite may be obtained for submission to the Government of India. ; (True Extract.) From the Officiating Under-Secretary to the Govern- ment of India, Home Department, (Public), to D. Winter, Hsq., Melbourne, dated Fort William, January 1873, No. 217, para. 2:— _ “Tn reply I am to state that many such specifics have been tested and found entirely to fail with the poison of Indian snakes. You can however communicate, through the Government of Fort St. George, with Dr. Shortt, who is engaged in the Madras Presidency in making experi- ments in alleged remedies for snake-bites; and if your specific is pronounced by Dr. Shortt after a full trial to be perfectly effectual, the Government of India will be pre- pared to consider the question of rewarding you.
