No. 441. Extract from a Military Despatch from the Right Honorable the Secretary of State for India, dated 29th August 1878, No, 63, para. 7. With reference to your Military letter, No. 40, dated 2nd April 1878, I have to inform you that His Royal Highness the Field-Marshal Commanding in Chief has approved of a step of Honorary rank on retirement being granted to Surgeon-Major John Shortt of the Madras Army.” “ Bertin, 19th December 1878.
