    would prescribe for a sick horse, or a sick cow, or a sick bird. He would do this for the poor as well as for the rich: he would visit both alike; and he liked to make presents of seeds, plants, pigeons, poultry, &. At Yercaud, Dr. Shortt took the initiative in several matters which afterwards passed out of his hands to those of others who could not agree with himasto their management. He started the formation of the Planters’ Association on the Shervaroy Hills, and was its Chairman for some time, during which it did good work. But new comers found his deafness objectionable. He first attempted the formation of a Volunteer Company on the Shervaroy Hills; but it was not till others took up the project that it succeeded. He brought about the opening of a school at Yercaud for _ the children of Planters’ writers and of poor Kast Indians. This school was kept going till it was made over to the clereyman who came to take permanent charge of the sta- tion. After a few years Dr. Shortt helped considerably towards the opening of another school for a higher class of children; and on his own grounds he paid a teacher to instruct the children of his servants and _ labourers, and also gave practical proof of his interest in _ the evangelization of the Malayalis or hill-men.
