Big distriets in tlie Soutb of Russia and tlie Caucasus, such as Bessarabia, Odessa, and other countries situated around thè Black Sea, are given over to thè cultivation of maize. This cultivation of maize in those distriets is very advantageous to thè peasant, as he is able fìrst to finish thè harvest of all other grain before he is obliged to touch maize, as it can be left on thè halm tilt thè start of thè winter without deterioration whatever. Another advantage is that thè composition of thè soil in those distriets is good enough to support repeated crops of maize without any fertilising or interchange of other crops, consequently tlie whole district in thè Caucasus controlled by tlie Yladikawkas Railway from Rostoff to Yladikawkas towards Batoum and Novorosisk is producing ìarge quantities of maize. Up to tlie jiresent there is no other ontlet for thè crop but home consumption by thè native population for their own and their cattle food, and therefore not mudi profit is made from thè cultivation of it, only a comparatively small portion of thè land is used, and thè larger portion is not cultivated at all.
