Desc: sp.gr. 0.750. Liquid composed of 74^ etliel oxide, [(03115)20], and 26^ alcohol. General properties are given under aether fortior. Spir^itus tM, spirit of ether, (yE. 30, alcohol 70 parts), 5 )4...2, ' [(/m. 2...8]. Mother For^tior oris, Stronger Ether, 5 ^...1, [gm.2..A1. Syn: iEther puris; pure ether; E. hydrique pur, Fr.; reiner aether, G. Desc: sp.gr, 0.716. Consists of 'Ji ^ ethel oxide and 6^ alcohol. Prepared by the action of nitric acid upon alcohol and potassa. A thin, clear, colorless liquid, very diffusive, with a burning sweetish taste and characteristic odor. Sol. in alcohol, chloroform, benzin, fixed oils, and in 8 parts water. Is highly inflammable; evaporates readily. Action: anesthetic; anodyne; antispasmodic; stimulant. Usei: gastralgia; hepatic or renal colic; asthma; syncope; cairdiac stimulant; hysteria; dysmenor- rhoea; neuralgia; cephalalgia; aids digestion of cod-liver oil; with turpentine or castor oil aids in dissolving biliary calculi. Anes- thetic in all surgical operations, especially those requiring much time._ Synerg: chloroform; opium; chloral; alcohol. Antag: arterial sedatives; quinia; oxygen;-protoxide nitrogen; strvch- nia; nux vomica; physostigma; picrotoxine. Incomp: disso'lves iodine, bromine, corrosive sublimate, oils, resins, balsams, sul- phur, phosphorus, tannin, caoutchouc, gutta-percha, benzoin, tolu, etc. Antidotes: emetics; inversion of patient; stimulants; cofTee. Spir^itus us, compos^itus i, compound spirits of ether, Hoff- mann's anodyne, (stronger ether 30 parts; alcohol, 67: etherealoil,3parts), 5 >^...2, [f/jft. 2...8]. .Hither Ace^ticusi, Acetic ether, 5 X- -K. Igm. 1...2]. Syn: acetate of ethyl, naptha aceti; E. acetique, Fr.; essig- ather, G. Desc: C,TL,Q,U,0,; 88; sp. gr. 0.889. Prepared from the action of sulphuric acid upon alcohol and sodium. Is a trans- parent, colorless liquid of strong ethereal, somewhat acetous odor, and of refreshing taste. Neutral reaction. Sol. in ether, chloroform, etc. and in 12 parts of water.
