Also i in his dedicatory preface tothe second part, Gianmatteo e pavois calling his prince by name. He is happy now to nated the second part of this work, referring to his de- cation of the first part ,quam superioribus proxime annis am- ; ssi 10 nomine tuo dedicaui*. The mention of the illustrious son ermes and his family which he was attending in the absence of the prince, and the date at the end ,Ex Papia die 9 mensis oc- bris 14717, fix the personality of the prince to whom the work is ited, t 1e place and date of the preface. The prince is Galeazzo Sforza, the eldest son ofthe great condottiere who usurped aca Maria Visconti, the illegitimate daughter of Filippo aria Visconti, last of his line (1412—1 447). Galeazzo became se eI aby the other ete: houses of the time. y _ The Statement at the end ofthe second part: “Begun by Marcus ‘composer’ of the work, Gianmatteo, on September 24, 1471,“ has a led to all sorts of conjectures. Some bibliographers (Ti raboschi, Gianmatteo himself, with the help of Marcus Gatinaria and with a local printer’s advice, had printed the book in his own house. Ferrari adopts the latter hypothesis and, in addition, believes oI t the printing of the first part was begun in 1462, and that it S issued some time before the second part, which he conjec- | tures left Gianmatteo’s, the compositor’s, printing office in October 471. This would make this book, or at least its first part, the first Of any books printed in Italy, ‘Sweynheym and Pannartz ha ang. set up their press at Santa Scholastica in Subiaco only . Apparently not printed. a series of letters during the years 1471 and 1472 Gianmatteo reports reg om the Castello in Pavia to his lord in Milan, on the state of health eo his chil n, Giangaleazzo, Hermes and Clara.
