![THE SEX CAN BE CONTROLLED. Is it not strange, then, to hear ministers of the Gospel and other good people sighingly exclaim that this thing can not be helped ! Yet they know that the u wee thing which is sent in mercy, and becomes a well-spring of joy, would very often be far more welcome if of a different sex ! We tell them they are in error—we are tempted to say they sin—in this matter. For just as surely as the patriarch Jacob, in his worldly wisdom [Genesis xxx : 37-42] took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chest- nut tree, and pilled white streaks in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods; and then set these rods before the flocks in the gutters in the watering-troughs when the flocks came to drink; and the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ring-streaked, speckled, and spotted; and just as surely as he laid these rods before the eyes of the stronger cattle only, and not before the weaker cattle, so that the stronger young cattle were naturally marked as his, while the feebler were La- ban's, just so surely, by parity of reasoning, would similar worldly wisdom produce strong instead of weakly children, and those almost always of the sex most desired by the parents.
