    auricular nerve, and exciting pain in some persons; possibly a more exact measurement might be obtained by employing an instrument which would record the pressure exerted, on the lines of Lipschutz’s1 “ sensimeter ” designed to gauge the degree of sensitiveness in cutaneous areas. Some persons do not feel any pain, and may be called hypo- sensitive, whereas others complain ex¬ cessively and are hypersensitive ; between these two extremes come what may be regarded as the average or normal persons as judged by their susceptibility to pain. The same classification may be adopted with regard to other reactions. Idiosyn¬ crasies are due to altered susceptibility or sensitiveness, and of the two directions in which sensitiveness may be changed the most frequent and the most striking is that in which it is much increased.
