    PREFACE. In preparing this volume, the main purpose of the Authors has been the presentation of such material as is necessary to convey a working knowledge of Ophthalmology to students and prac- titioners. The work is not only representative of extensive research into the rich literature upon the subject, but is expressive of the result of careful clinical experience that has extended over many years of active practice. The Senior Author takes this opportunity to acknowledge his indebtedness to his former teachers, Ferdinand v. Arlt, Eduard v. Jaeger, and Ludwig Mauthner, for many of the ideas inculcated in the following pages. Philadelphia, July, 1893.
