![extent; and thus carefully to peruse the history of human nature, and make a faith- ful report. This process is necessarily circuitous. A considerable degree of patience is required, to pursue it through its various stages; and it is possible that some parts of the treatise will, to many readers, appear chargeable with a tedious and unnecessary minutenesy; particularly in the definitions concerning the intellectual powers of man. The charge will be valid should any distinctions have been made, where no rea] difference exists; work of this nature, to notice such differ- ences notwithstanding their minuteness ; for each will lead, in some connection or other, to its own peculiar consequences.
