J. Hopcson, during the whole of the Period of the Occupation of Curacao by the British Forces, 1811-14, 3 vols, folio, and over 400 loose Letters and Documents, Printed and Manuscript #10 The Major-General apparently found the military in a bad state of discipline on his arrival. His censures and reprimands are frequent during the first year, chiefly of the officers. He is constantly attempting to alleviate the conditions of the privates. ‘The Maj.-Gen. has observed with regret the number of men of the Regt. [7th West India] under your command in Hospital in consequence of being punished . . . recommend you to resort to corporal punishment as seldom as possible,” &c. Severe reprimand to Maj. Clermont for improper stoppages from his men. Censure for over-chargal of private of 6th Batt., 60th Regt., for pair of gaiters supplied. Privates authorized to require an explanation of their accompts in a respectful manner. If rate of messing is such as to allow the junior officers to belong to it, &c., ** Lt.-Col. Nasmyth and Maj. Clermont . . . total incapacity for command,” &c. Some of the letters to Maj.-Gen. Hodgson are signed by Lord Palmerston, Lord Bathurst, and other important statesmen.
