![NEW EDITION OF YOUATT’S WORK ON THE HORSE. Just published, in One Volume, 8vo. price 10s, 6d. cloth, T HE HORSE : WITH A TREATISE OH DRAUGHT, By WILLIAM YOUATT. With numerous Woodcut Illustrations, chiefly from Designs by W, Harvey, Third Edition, revised and enlarged by E. N. Gabriel, M.R.C.S. C.V.S., Secretary to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. (t ^TWENTY-EIGrHT years ago JL M.r. Youatt, who had then brought to the dignity of a science the system of veterinary surgery, published, under the auspices of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, his first edition o£ the present work, Twelve years later the requirements of the pro- fession oalled for a reprint of a book that by that time had taken the place of a standard authority. A second edition, .with so much additional matter as to be* come almost a new work, was the conse- quence. In the sixteen years which have since elapsed, the profession has made such advances in the intelligence of its members and in the accumulation of scientific fact's, so much important new information has been acquired, both in respect to the pathology of the horse and the treatment of the diseases to which he is liable, as well as clearer knowledge of the nature and habits of this noble ani- mal ; above all, so much more humane and scientific views as respects his edu- cation and management have been of late propounded,—that to keep pace with the spread of knowledge and the en- lightened opinions of the time as regards this ne- cessary branch of study, a third and still more com- plete edition of Mr, Youatt’s standard work became a matter of absolute requirement, So well does the book before us come up to the need of every branch of its comprehensive subject, that it is not only one of the most valuable authorities on vete- rinary science we possess, but a performance most creditable to Mr. Gabriel* the editor of the third edition. The first thing that strikes us is the admirable classification that obtains throughout the book. The contents are divided into twenty-seven chapters, and comprise be- sides the early records of the horse, his zoological classification and natural his- tory, as well as the anatomy, physiology, and disease of eyery part, with its treat- ment. In fact, nothing has been omitted that directly or indirectly can claim a pertinent connexion with the horse, either in health or sickness, domesticity or freedom. Several of the chapters, such as that on the early history of the ani- mal, the foreign and home breeds, viees, management, and medicines, may be re- garded as clear and able treatises • some of them extremely interesting, but all eminently sound and practical. The work is liberally illustrated in the best style of the art of wood engraving, The editor does ample justice to Mr, Karey’s new principles of—not taming, for we oonsider that an objectionable term—but rather education, for it amounts to that; indeed, there is great freedom and can- dour of opinion throughout the volume. In recom- mending it without reserve to every one interested in the breeding, health, and general well-being of the horse, we can promise to aliwho consult it an amount of practical information on those sub- jects nowhere to be found better, or more usefully arranged, than in the third edition of Youatt on thQ Horse” SVujEba, August 21, 1S59, YOUATT’S WORK ON THE DOG tv- e™ - v 0Sj—may a]s0 p0 had. and CO.
