Chlorine.—The use of chlorine has been recom- mended in scarlet fever, and, from the reports, its exhibition has been attended with success. Dr. Hunt recommends the chlorate of potash in can- crum oris and phagedena of the cheek, in doses of one or two scruples in the 24 hours. Mercury.—Mr. Murray,* in a paper on the direct and primary action of calomel, has added some little to our knowledge of this remedy: he shows, from experiments on dogs, that, in moderate doses, it excites an afflux of blood to the minute arteries and capillaries of the gastro-intestinal mucous mem- brane, more particularly the gastric and colic por- tions, imparting to it a capilliform, punctiform, or uniform red tinge, &c.; that it increases the flow of bile into the duodenum and the secretions from the intestinal mucous follicles and serous exhalants; that in inordinate doses, (1, 2, 3 drachms,) in addi- tion to the above, capilliform injections of the serous coat of the intestines and a morbid sanious dis- charge from the mucous follicles.
