![Statistics During the year ending December 31st, 1929 the Society admitted to the two branches of its service 5,443 cases. The number of births was 4,695. The number of births in the Borough of Manhattan according to the returns from the Health Department was 40,741 of which 37,011 were reported by phy¬ sicians, 3,730 by midwives and others. The Society cared for over 11 per cent of the entire number of confinements in the Borough and more than 12 per cent of those treated by physi¬ cians. The total number of applications for treatment was 5,567. In the Out-Door Department the number of applications was 1,302, the number treated was 1,126, the number of confine¬ ments was 1,000. The number of applications for treatment in the Hospital was 4,265; the number treated was 4,306 and the number of confinements was 3,653. The ambulance service brought to the Hospital 58 cases. Detailed figures showing the Hospital’s work during the year will be found in the following pages. Of the 3,985 patients concerning whom information was ob¬ tainable, 3,954 lived in front and 31 resided in rear tenements. 83 patients resided in basements, 348 on stoop floors, 884 on first floors, 857 on second floors, 704 on third floors, 505 on fourth floors and 581 on fifth floors and 23 not noted.
