    are continually lost from cold in Russia, Poland, and America ; which, if it be considerably below the freezing point, and of long continuance, is followed by death itself. And yet a moderate degree of cold, not continued too long, is fre¬ quently valuable in the treatment of disease, and is of great use in the furtherance of the medical art. Before we can arrive at just conclusions on the effects of heat applied to the living body, it will be necessary to fix a medium as a point to set out from. At 60 degrees of Fahrenheit’s thermo¬ meter, the several functions of the living body are performed in due order: if the temperature be increased, which it may be without any dis¬ tress of feeling, for 10, 15, or .20 minutes, a tem¬ porary strength or impulse is given to all these functions, the blood is quickened and equalized in its circulation throughout the vessels of the skin, the extremities, and the parts situated in¬ ternally; and as all the secretions of the body are drawm from the blood, there is a consequent increase of every secretion, and a quickened action of the absorbent and exhalant or discharging ves¬ sels of the skin: torpidity is removed, and ob¬ structions are more or less overcome, and a free
