In goneral the position ro.uains unsatisfactory, tho same as that obtaining during the past fow years, Eo now work has been undertaken and, in consequence, as I have indicated previously, much remains to be done in tho District. All the uj_:) to date plants have worked satisfactorily during the year. HQUSIIJG, During the year there was again, unfortunately, a reduction in the number of houses built by the Council - 16 as against 45 in 1955 ana 86 in 1954, These, with their numbers, were built in the following villages Chelmorton 6, Youlgre.ve 4, cund Calvor 6. Private building accovintod for 19 houses, the same as last year, the villages and numbers bein_g Over Haddon 1, Rowland 1, Hathersago 4, Groat tori^j,stonG 4, Baslow 1, Little Longstone 2, Asiiford 1, Tideswell 2, Cur bar 1, Calver 1, Proggatt 1. The programme under slum clooranco v/as continued during- tho year, V/ATER, During this year a large part of the Area v/atoir Scheme mains were put into service, April tho now pumping station at Grindloford started to deliver water from the Dorv/ent Valley aqueduct to Lady^vash Reservoir for distribution to Bradwell, Eyam and tiioso villages originally supplied from the Abney, Camphill ana i'fe.g Clough sources. The springs at Highcliffe, Eyam continued to be used. The pumping station at 'Paddington also began to take v/ater from the new liiddleton Common Reservoir ana to supply the parts of Flagg, Chelmorton, Lionyash and Hartington Ivliddle Quarter, which previously had no piped supplies. Brushfiold and Blackv/oll received supplies of \/ater for tho first timo. It v/as possible to maintain e. continual supply of water at Chelmorton and Paddington during the summer by augmenting the springs with \;ater from the now mains. Eventually at Taddington itself the sirring supply was olimina.ted leaving only Friostcliffe Ditch with hard water. Tho pexishes of Aldv;ark and Ivonbrook Grange wore supplioa with water from Shot House for the first time. Almost the entire village of Stanton-in-Ecak was transferred from a private supply to tho now mains. Parts of Birchover and Elton \]oro transferred from the Shot House sux^ply to tho new msEns arm Der\/ont Valley water. Tho springs supplying Earl Sterndale driea up during tho summer and water had to be pumped from the river for a short tmne. At Bradwell tho springs and cams at Doadmans Clough were taken out of service and all water being supplied comes from Ladyv/ash, Eya-i. Consiaerablo progress \/as made in tho olErination of stand taps in villages whore owners of property agreoa to connect to the mains.
