    Bartons Medicine. recited Letters Patent, as in and by the same (relation being thereunto had, may more fully and at large appear. NOW KNOW YE, that in compliance with the said proviso, I, the said Joseph Barton, do hereby declare that my said discovery is described in manner following (that is to say): — 5 Vital air oxigin, or depholgesticated air, may be obtained from various substances, vizV almost all metallic substances and metallic calxis from clays, earths, &c. The sole agency of heat is sometimes sufficient to disengage vital air from the substance containing it, but generally vegetable or mineral acids are necessary to the production of a quantity sufficient for real medical use. The 10 mode which I pursue is, first to ascertain the quantity of vital air any substances 1 mean to obtain it from contains, and then to put into a retort a quantity of the analyzed material with or without any decomposing acid, as may be necessary. To this retort is then attached a tubulated receiver in part filled with water, through which the vital air is made to pass; the mephitic air or 15 cretaceous acid, which almost always will rise with the vital air, will attach itself to the water. A second receiver adapted to the first, into which pure spirit or alcohol is gradually introduced, will then receive the vital air free from the mephetic gas: the pure vital air combining with the spirit forms the liquid of compound concentrated fluid vital air; but as inflammable air will 2(y often be produced in the operation, a third receiver attached to the second, as the second to the first, will be found necessary or at least highly useful, into which the inflammable air will, from its lightness, readily ascend, and may be¬ got quit of by absorption, in an alkaline solution in the third receiver, or by occasionally opening the stopper of the third receiver. Vital air, simply combined <£& with pure spirit in the mode before mentioned, is perhaps the most universal solvent in existence, and in peculiar cases may be combined with all or any of the curative medicines with singular advantage ; but in the diseases mentioned in my Patent, singly and alone it is a curative. Aeriated preventive fluid is made in the same manner as to apparatus, but instead of spirit in the second receiver 5$ the vital air is combined with essential oil and distilled water. Aeriated liquid balm is also made by the same process, only into the second receiver a sufficient quantity of the flowers of roses, jassamine, &c., or of the expressed as well as essential oils of sweet-smelling vegetables is introduced to enable the distilled water to combine with and retain the vital air. 35 In witness whereof, I, the said Joseph Barton, have hereunto set my hand and seal, this Twenty-eighth day of February, in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and ninety-nine.
