L., red morocco, richly gilt, the sides decorated with gold fillets and central panels with corner fleurons, the backs are elaborately tooled in gold, the edges of the leaves gauffred and finely painted (Le Gascon) Paris, N, Buon, 1633, 5, 8 [See ILLUSTRATION], into, old calf, enclosed in a red morocco caseé, EXTREMELY RARE A Bovrdeavs, Par 8S. Millanges, 1582 QUARTO. and black within woodcut border, woodcuts, original binding of calf gilt, on the upper cover a sunk panel containing a half-length figure of Luther, bare-headed, turned slightly to the left, holding a closed book ; behind are two renaissance columns supporting an arch, at the spring two figures holding escutcheons and the ends of a garland ; below, a tablet with the verses “ Nosse cupis, etc.” (cp. Weale, B. 192¢c) ; on the lower cover a similar panel of Melancthon, but turned to the right, with an open book and the verses “ Forma Philippe, etc.” (cp. Weale, B192p); both panels with contemporary colouring, obscuring the escutcheons, above the upper the initials “ G. M. N.” and below the date 1581, on the lower above the verses the same date with the initials “S. R. W.” ; joints mended, lower cover loose ; sold as a binding not subject to return Wittemberg, 1574 et Romanorum regis fitii, Nati Anno 1529; Prophezeiungen fiir Ferdinand II auf jeden Tag des Jahres 1581 ; Leonitius (Cyprianus) Mathematicus.
