![Fe THE DISPENSATORY OF THE UNITED STATES. _ PARTI. ; Le ‘i ri =) MATERIA MEDICA. Tue Materia Medica, in its most comprehensive sense, enitraies all those substances which are capable of making sanative impressions on the human system; but, as the term is employed in this work, it has a more re- into commerce by the ‘manufacturer; the other, those which are prepared by the apothecary, and are the objects of officinal directions. The former are enumerated under the title of ““Marerta Meptca;’’ the latter under that of « PREPARATIONS,” or “Preparations and Composrrions.’? In Dispensa- tories, which may be considered as commentaries on the -Pharmacopeias, the same arrangement is usually followed; and the authors of the present, the apothecary are collected in one place, and are thus more easily referred any mode of arrangement which makes no distinction between the original medicinal substances and their preparations. Under the head of Materia “Medica, therefore, in this Dispensatory, we treat of medicines in the state only in which they are produced by nature, or come into the hands of the apothecary. Of these medicines, such as are recognised by our National Pharmacopeia are most minutely described; but we consider also all that are included in the officinal catalogues of the British Colleges. Mf _ Another point in which we accord with the Pharmacopeias, is the alpha- betical arrangement of the objects | of the Materia Medica. As a Dispensatory Mag is inte dpc ag reference than for regular perusal, it is important that its contents s ould be so disposed as to facilitate consultation. _ Medicines, o , ‘]](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b33095048_0027.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
