Cancer research : fighting cancer.

Illustrates the general pattern of cancers in various forms: shows the work already done in research establishments, hospitals, laboratories and clinics. Discusses certain specific forms of cancer and the work yet to be done in research to find cures. Shot at the time when smoking was still permitted on public transport, it is stated that 80% lung cancer deaths would decrease cancer deaths in the under 80s and B-roll footage shows the problem with secondary or passive smoking on trains. Breast cancer is a major cause of cancer deaths in women; Mr John Hayward, Director of the Breast Cancer Unit at Guy's and New Cross Hospitals talks about progress to date. Two women have their breasts examined by the male consultant who speculates about treating breast cancer in a non-radical way. Dr W. F. Bodmer, Director of Research at the I. C. R. F., talks about Interferon and holds a small phial of the drug up to the camera. Childhood cancer is the second cause of death in children, although at the time the film was made, there was a 75% survival rate. Professor J. S. Malpas, Director of Medical Oncology Unit at St Bartholomew's Hospital talks about childhood cancers and about the issues around treating children and their families, set against B-roll of staff caring for the children on the wards. Dr Joyce Taylor talks about improved diagnostics (specifically identifying cancer from cell biopsies). Bereaved people talk about their lost family members to cancer and survivor stories. The Honourable Angus Ogilvy, President of I. C. R. F. completes the film with an address to the camera asking for funds.
