![7 *4 -V T CHAP. lit ' ; Of Waking Coma. ■»He difeafe is called Woking Com* , or Coma Vigil, is put among fleeping Difeafes; yet becaufe it is another Condition different from the relt, we will treat of it in this Chapter by Thi5 Coma Vigil is a Difeafe in which the Patient lieth with his Eyes fliut as if he were afleep, when he is awaked and diftra&ed ; and if you touch him, he presently openeth his Eyes, and looks ftrangely, and falls afleep again, which is hindred by divers ftrange imaginations and fan¬ cies. This Difeafe Galen placeth as a mean, between a Pfirenfie and Lethargie, and calleth it Ttuth The ufual Caufe of this Difeafe, is Choler mixed With Flegm, by which Humors the Brain is made too moift, or it is fwelled or inflamed • from whence, either the Tumor called AW- fypelas cedematofum, or oedema Erifypelatofum do arife. But becaufe thofe Humors are diverfly mixed, fometimes a greater proportion of the one than of another, it comes to pafs that the Difeafes from them are divers: for if Choler be chief, then it is a Delirium or Dotage, and the fick-maft fleepeth but little though his Eyes be fliut; but if Flegm prevail, the Patient doth deep more, and is lefs doting, and being raifed makes lefs noife, and is not fo foolifh. This Coma Vigil comes by fympathy from Choleric* Vapors mixed with Flegmaticfc that fly into the Head, which happens in Feavers that come from mixed Humors, efpecially in half-Tertians, which are made of a Tertian and a Quotidian. We may fafely affirm that this Difeafe cometh front Vapors Amply hot and moift in ftrong Feavers, becaufe deep comes from moifture, and waking comes from heat. D / AG NO ST IC Kfi\ The Diagnofis or knowledge of this Difeafe is plain enough by what hath been faid, That they which have it, lie with their Eyes fliut, and feem to deep, yet they cannot fleep, but tofs and tumble, lift themfelves up fuddenly, drive to get out of the Bed, and then fall again afleep. The divers Caufes are ealily known from what hath been faid/ This Difeafe is accounted dangerous if the Brain have a Swelling or Inflammation, or if it be over¬ come with the Humors above mentioned, namely Choler and Flegm ; or if it come of Vapors which arife from the malignant humor of a PeftilentrFeaver. If the Dotage or Delirium be ftrong, it produceth a Coinvulfion, for it comes of a Humor or Va¬ por which is very fliarp, which falling upon Nervous parts caufeth a Convulflon. ' C UK £.] A true Coma Vigil is cured as a Phrenfie and Lethargie, and if it incline moft to a Fhrenfie, then the Medicines proper for that are moft to be ufed *, if to a Lethargie, then the Me¬ dicines proper for that. Bata Coma that cometh by Sympathy, is cured by curing the malignant Feaver from whence it cometh ; but the more peculiar Remedies muft alfo be ufed, which draw aud keep humors from the Brain in the beginning of the Difeafe, as bleeding in the Arm and Foot, Vi- living Creatures to the Head to diffolYe the Humor, CHAP, tm O f the Sleeping ^Difeafes called Catoche, and * - ’ • . Cuftom hath brought it to pafs, that Catoche, and Catalepfis, are ta¬ ken for one and the fame Difeafe in all Authors; the Latines call it commonly. Congelationi or ftiffnefs of the Body. v It is a Difeafe feldom feen, and to be admired, and thofe Authors which have feen the Difeafe do think it fo much worth the Obfervation, as to defcribc the whole paflage and Hiftory of it, Firft of x all](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b30327805_0001_0039.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
