![Obfcrv. z6. fheHifeafe Cholera. ' 717. In the Year (if I miftake not) 1564/before the Plague brake out in Ne- vtonrsy there was rife the Difeafe called Cbo- fera> killing many in four dayes fpace. Yet thofe that fought help at firft, were all in a manner cured by this following Method. In the firft place. When I conceived the Pati¬ ents had (ufiiciently vomited, that they might not be pver-weakened , I gave them Marmalade of Quinces aromatized if the Feaver were not very intenfe , but if it were intenfe I gave them limple Marmalade morn¬ ing and evening two hours before meat in a fiber fpoon , and forbad them to ufe any Drink, although the Patients were tormen¬ ted with an unquenchable thirft , becaufe Drink did encreafe their vomiting and loof- nefs, whereupon death followed unavoida¬ bly. I cured the Numbnefs and Convulfions of their Legs with Oyl of Chamomel hot; and to help the Vomiting and loofnefs, I ap¬ plied Embroches of Oyl of Nard, ofMaftich, and ofQuinces, wherewith their whole bellies were anointed, and then I fprinkled thereof] Powders of Coriander prepared , of Rofes, ofMaftich, of Mints dried, of Citron peels dried, Lignum Aloes, Laudanum, Nutmeg, the two Corals, and fuch like. Alfo thej took an Opiate of Conferve of Rofes, Myro- balans preferved, Powder of Pearls, vedCo- ral, and Ivory, with Syrup of Quinces, and our Corans. Sometimes if the Patients were ftrong, I gave them at the beginning of the Difeafe Rhubarb in the fubftance, not negle£iing Cordial Epithems. The fame kinds of Medicaments I ufed in Children which were wafted with this kind of flux, or the melting flux fo called, efpecially in the Summertime, Iadvifed fometimes Clyfters partly (Lengthening, partly nourifhing, and all in a manner recovered through the mercy of God. Obferoy, Pain of the Hemorrhoids, and falling down of the Fundament. 718. A certain man of the County of Vc- nayflirh was tormented with a grievous pain of his Haemorrhoids, which would not give way to any ufual Pain-a(fwagers, viz. Fo¬ mentations of Mallows , the Hemorrhoidal Herb, flowers of Taffm Barhattu, Chamo- mel, Oyntments of Butter, new Suet, Hens- greafe, Oyl of Line-feed, and a thoufand fuch like. Wherefore his Appetite being loft, and not being able to fleep, his forces were much impaired. Nor could the end of the CJyfter'pipe enter his Fundament, the * • f Hemorrhoidal Veins had fo Twoln the neighboring parts. And therefore it was that he had no ftool in eight dayes time, al¬ though he had twice taken Caffianevv drawn. But at laft being advifed by a certain learned German that went that way, having * reiterated many Fomentations of emollient things, I caufed an Oyntmcnc to be made of the juyee of Herb Two-penny and frefbBar- ter, vvherevvith I anointed Tents, and put them inleifurely, andfoaftvvaged the pain. ^Whereupon the Patient pvefently fell afleep, and his Appetite was, reftored. The, fame Patient a little after had his Fundament fab len out, which was cured with this Remedy^ and never fell out again. Take Oyl of Maftich a fufficient quantity ♦ Boyl therein eight Beetles f Bugs or Flies fo called) and then anoint his Fundament with this Oyl, and fprinklc thereon the Powder ofEgg-ftiels, out of which Chicken have j been hatched. The fame German told me that alfo the juyee of Herb Purple or Moth» murren, does wonderfully mitigate all the pains of the Hemorrhoids. . , /■;. Richeripu the Kings Connfeb lor at Nemoursy was taken with a fudden and moft grievous pain in the lower part of his Back betwixt the Kidneys, as he was buflly’ imployed in his Garden, which was near his Houfe; and being not able to ftand for pain, but fain to keep his bed, he began toBe Feaverifti, and yet was opprefled with no thirft, becaufe the Feaver was not very vio° lent; moreover, his head did not ake at all * and he flept well enough. The day follow¬ ing his whole body was wet with Sweat, which was not procured by any Medica¬ ments , but brake out of its. own accord , whereby the pain of his back was allayed. But from that day forward he did fweat much more plentifully • fo that a man would have thought it came out ©f fome Springs feituatein feveral parts of his body. And this held till the ninth day, for it could not be fupprefled by any Powders made to flop immoderate fweating, no nor by frequent fanning of the cold air upon the Patient, nor by throwing alide the coverlids and blan¬ kets, nor by opening the Windows, that the wind might have free paffage into the Cham¬ ber ; but his forces decaying by little and little, whiles he was fpeaktng and ordering the Affairs of his Houfe, he was prevented by fudden death, no other fymptoms being joyned with the fweat. Now although we ufed both Clyfters and Purgative Medica- mentSj that we might recal the Motion of Nature](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b30327805_0001_0911.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
