![r s° ] wife prefumed that no opinion, uft- fupported by fadts and experience, (how reipedtable foever the charadter of its author may be) will be admitted in evidence, when contracted with the authority of a fadt, which feems to be clearly demonftrated to our fenfes. The general charadter of lead, and the preparations of lead, when given internally, has been, that they cool, in- crafiate, repel, abforb, and obtund acri¬ mony. And it is very well known, that their real power has, in many inftances, feemed to anfwer to fuch a general charadter; for there are fcarcely any medicines, which produce their effedts more immediately, or with greater cer¬ tainty, in colliquative fweats, in fluxes, and in hemorrhages.
