SANITARY CIRCJMSTANCE OF EALDOCK 2.(iv) Food Premises;, Sho]js and Offices During the year regular inspections of food premises v/ere carried out and action taken to secure compliance v/ith the Council's Byelaws and the Pood and Drugs Act. Forty seven samples of ice-cream. v.^ere taken anci submitted to the Public Health Laboratory for analysis. No inspections of offices were carried out. (v) Smoke Abatement Two observations v;ere made v/ith a vievv to abating smoke nuisances and informal action taken. (vi) Swimming Pool (private) Regular sampling of the water was carried' out; and the results showed that a satisfactory standard v/as maintained throughout the summer months. (vii) Eradication of Bed Bup;s Two complaints regarding bed bug infestation were notified and dealt with during the year. SECTION D HOUSING One house was erected by private enterprise during the year and 55 houses were completed by the Local Authority. The serving of 9 formal notices, 4 preliminary notices, informal letters and other action resulted in the follov/ing housing defects being remedied to private properties.- Choked drains ... 20 Drains relayed or extended.. 4 .//c's repaired 5 Overflow/ pipes causing Floors repaired. 3 dampness... ... ... 14 Eaves/roof repaired... ■7 • • • (• Rainv/ater pipes defective. . . 3 Dangerous wall/fencing 2 ¥aste pipes repaired.. ... 2 Soil Pipe replaced . . . 1 Dampness remedied ... ... 15 Dust bins replaced . . . ... 12 Chimney defects 3 Miscellaneous 30 Housing Act 195^ Overcrov/ding Five cases of overcrov/ding v/ere investigated and action taken v/ith a view to eventually rehousing the people concerned. SECTION E INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD (a) Milk Supply Supervisory work in connection with dairy farms is now under the control of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. A close inspection of the milk and containers supplied to the schools ensured a sat -sfactory standard being- main tained. (b) Meat and Other Foods Regular inspection of butchers shops in the tov/n shows that the quality of fresh meat, inspected at Letchworth, continues to be very good.
