    Preface xiii wisdom from all quarters, but we hope that our skepticism will not be confused with pessimism about the solution to the schizophrenia puzzle. It will be solved, undoubtedly before the twentieth century ends. We have dedicated this book to Eliot Slater, our friend and mentor.
