A child entrusted with a message, whether it be to the cook or the gardener or what not, should first have it delivered to him precisely and should repeat it before starting, and should then go and give it without attending to anything by the way. I have known servant troubles arise through the inaccurate delivery of messages, especially if a return mes- sage has to be brought; for the slightest alteration may easily con- vert a polite request or acknowledg- ment into something offensive,—and this without any hostile intention on the part of the messenger.
