![SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA Water Supplies from all sources proved adequate during Hie year and there was nc- shortage of main water. The Water Undertakers of the Rural District are;- (a) The Portsmouth and Gosport Water Company, 26 Commercial Road, Portsmouth, which supplies the parishes of Clanfield, Horndean and Rowlands Castle, and (b) The Wey Valley Water Company,, Famham, Surrey. This Company now supplies the remaining parishes. As reported last year, a more detailed examination of supplies was commenced and just over half the recorded private supplies were dealt with. The progress in this field is noteworthy. It was found that the headings under which figures were previously reported to you did not tell the whole story and I hope that the facrs, as now presented, give a more complete picture. Two hundred and fifty grouped houses are reported upon and this leaves a similar number of more scattered and remote properties which, it is hoped, will be dealt with in I96l» One hundred and sixty-nine of the houses visited are now connected to mains supplies with taps over sinks indoors and in sixteen other oases externa], standpipes are provided. Four properties were found to be supplied from a ram and negotiations are proceeding for a mains supply in these cases. Twelve properties were found still to be obtaining their domestic water from, rain supplies. In some cases there is no alternative, because of relative ground levels, and in other cases rain water is preferred. A watch has to be kept on quality and quantity in these cases. A spring supply, formerly serving twenty-one dwellings near Petersfield, is now restricted to seven. When the River Rother flooded in October, i960 the spring was grossly contaminated and sterilisation was undertaken. Such supplies are necessarily prone to contamination and this is recognised by those water undertakers who collect from springs and chlorinate as a matter of general pract Although eighteen houses were recorded as using well water, eight of these are connected to an estate supply with substantial reservoirs. A chlorinating plant was installed following unsatisfactory reports on the quality Twenty-four unsatisfactory supplies no longer appear on the department* £ records. They were associated with houses which were subject to demolition orders or became disused following formal action under the Housing Act 1957* It is possible that some of these premises may re-appear in future statistics if any of them are recovered as living accoimiodation. Sewerage and Sewage Disposal The scheme for the main drainage of the parish of Greatham is in progress and it is anticipated that it will be completed by March 1962.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b29989012_0044.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
