As for Alkali’s, they are foon known by pour- ing an acid upon them, for prefently or foon af- ter, thererifesa violent Ebudition, which remains until the acid finds no more bodies to rarifie. This effect may make us reafonably conjecture that an Alkali is a terreftrious and folid matter,whofe pores are figured after fuch a manner that the acid points entring into them do ftrike and divide whatfo- parts of which the -A/kgli is compounded, are more or lefs folid, the acids finding more or lefs refiftance, do caufe a ftronger or weaker Ebulli- tion. So we fee the Effervefcency that happens in the diflolution of Coral is very much milder than thatin the diffolution of Silver. - There are as many different Alkal:'s, as there are bodies that have different pores, and this is the and with another not atall; for there muft be a due proportion between the acid points, andthe pores of the Alkals. . The nature of Alkals’s being thus eftablifhed, there will beno need of flying to an imaginary fale in Plants for explication of the Effervefcency , and ?twill be eafily conceived thatif an Alkali fale is full of a terreftrious matter that renders it porous like other -Alkali’s, it muft caufe an Ebullition.
