![AUTHOR'S PREFACE FOUETH AMEEIOAN EDITIOE^ In preparing a new edition of his work on Midwifery for his Ameri- can readers, the Anthor has gratefully to acknowledge the kind reception it continues to receive from the profession, A comjaaratively short time having elapsed since the last edition was jxiblished, there are naturally not many changes to make. The whole work, however, has been care- fully revised, and the chapter on Conception and Generation has been in great part rewritten, so as to incorporate the most recent advances in Embryology. The Author has to acknowledge the kind assistance he has received in this subject from his late colleague, Dr, W.
