    Kennedy's Improvements in the Apparatus used for Cupping. NOW THEREFORE KNOW YE, that in compliance with the said proviso, I, the said Charles Kennedy, do hereby declare my said Inventions to consist of a certain vessel, named the graduated cupping receiver, for the purpose of receiving and ascertaining the quantity of blood drawn into the cupping glass by means of certain incisions made on the body, and also of an improved 5 cupping glass, on the upper part whereof is an aperture or groove, to which is fitted a brass screw armed or bound with a piece of leather, for the purpose of introducing air into the said glass at the will of the operator. To the said screw, moreover, is attached a small brass rod, to which is fixed a small piece of sponge, tow, or other ignitable material, to be previously immersed in spirits 10 of wine, to procure the rarification of the air in the said glass upon ignition. And in further compliance with the said proviso, I, the said Charles Kennedy, do hereby describe the manner in which I use and perform my said Inventions by the following description thereof, reference being had to the Plate hereunto annexed, that is to say:— 15. Description of the Drawing. The Figure Number 1, marked by the letters A, A, represents the improved cupping glass, at the upper part of which is a brass screw, represented also by the second Figure B, and rendered air-tight by a piece of leather, marked b, attached to it. Into this screw B is affixed a small removable brass rod C, 2-0 also represented by the third Figure, having at the end thereof a piece of sponge, marked D, to be dipped in spirits of wine, and ignited upon application to the said rod C, being screwed by means of another small screw into the said large screw B; the said large screw B is to be screwed upon the upper part of the said glass, and the glass is to be so used, 25 The Figure 4, marked with the letter E, represents a vessel made of metal, named the graduated cupping receiver, intended to receive the blood drawn into the glass, by being placed under it when it is to be withdrawn, the shape of the mouth of the said graduated receiver being of a semi-circular form to fit that of the said glass, the said graduated cupping receiver being, moreover, 30 graduated for the purpose of ascertaining the quantity of blood drawn. Now, whereas my said Inventions may be made of various materials and dimensions, but such a glass as is herein-before described, and such a vessel so made as the graduated cupping receiver for the purpose of receiving and ascertaining the quantity of the blood drawn, being, to the best of my know- 35 ledge and belief, entirely new, and never before used within that part of His said Majesty’s United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland called England, His Dominion of Wales, or Town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, nor in any of His
