    As to Vines likewife, they may be rais’d ‘upon _ divers Soil. I have fufficiently defcrib’d thofé of Burgundy and Champaign, with the Method of Tillage and Culture; 1 fhall therefore here menti- on feveral other Sorts, which may be applicable to the fame Ufes. A Lieut, dry, Soil, either gravelly, {toney, or chalky, is moft proper; for as the Vines both Jove and require a good deal of Moifture, fo in thefe Soils, when ever the Rains or Dews fall, they are prefently drunk up and fwallow’d ‘by ‘the _ Lightnefs of the Soil, and the OpenefS of the Earth, and the Particles thereof fatten and mellow the fame, to the better nourifhing of the Plants, A Lieu, mellow Soil, if it be any thing fandy, is always warm, and is therefore proper for Vines, where the fame are fhelter’d by any Wall, or any proper Fence; and the Grapes that grow thereon will be generally more large than the other, as foon ripe, and as pleafant to the Taft, but will not continue altogether fo long upon the Vines as the other, being of a more watery Nature than thole ‘are, to: er A Far and mellow Soil, if it be light, will produce very good Vines, but they will be more proper for the Tooth than for the Prefs; for the Grapes will be very large and fair, and likewife pleafant to the Palate. . a, a A Cot p, heavy Soil is in no wife proper ; hats velly one; for in any of thefe Grounds the Vines
