It has befides the moft favorable influence on all the paflive virtues; it gives a foftnefs and lenfibility to the Heart, and a mildnefs and gentlenefs to the Manners; but above all, it produces an universal cha- rity and love to Mankind, however dif- ferent in Station, Country, or Religion. There is a fublime yet tender melan- choly, almoft the univerfal attendant on Genius, which is too apt to degenerate into gloom and difguft with the world.
