As for the vertues and effects of the Cacao Nut, or J°.h-de Utu Chocolate, all the American Travellers have written fuch Panegyricks, and fo many Experimental Obfervations, mdou that I ihould but degrade this Royal Liquor, if I fliould Herbar- Mixi~ offer at any; yet I think two or three Remarks upon it Bcnzonus cannot be unsuitable to this little Hiftory: feveral of ft?r- Ind*r-0c- thefe curious Travellers, and Phyficians, do agree in Cidtn*' &c* this, that the Cacao Nut has a wonderful faculty of quenching thirft, allaying Heftick heats, of nourilhing and fatning the Body. Mr. Gage acquaints us, that he Gages Survey ] drank Chocolate in the Indies two or three times every ofth day for twelve years together, and he fcarce knew what al'futt °f any Difeafe was in all that time, he growing very fat: fome objeft it is too oily and grofs, but then the bitter- nefs of the Nut makes amends, carrying the other off by {lengthening of the Bowels. Mr. Hughes informs us, Hughes Ame- tliat he liv’d at Sea for fome Months of nothing but Cho- hcan vhyfid- colate, yet neither his flrcngth, nor flelh were diminirti- art) p’I47# ed: he fays our Englijh Seamen are very greedy of it when they come into any Indian Port, and foon get plump countenances by the ufe of it. Mr. Hughes him- felf grew very fat in Jamaica by the vertue of the Cacao Nut; fo he judges it moft proper for Lean, Weak, and Confumptive Complexions: it may be proper for fome breeding Women, and thofe perfons that are Hypocon- driacal, and Melancholly.
